Speech and Debate
Benjamin Franklin once remarked, “Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.” Proverbs 10:19-21 commends righteous speaking in this way:
Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense.
We value correct speaking so much that we begin to train our students to be eloquent speakers in kindergarten. Now we have added a competitive edge to our speech program by becoming an affiliate of the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA).
Biblical Worldview
Veritas Academy approaches all of its teaching from a Biblical worldview. Therefore, our values and attitudes are shaped by a Biblical worldview. As such, we recognize that all self-expression must be carried out in the context of a Christian worldview. He [God] is before all things, and in him all things hold together ( Col. 1:17 New International Version). Our teachers work to re-direct the students’ thoughts and words to be outward rather than inward, that they may write and speak not to puff themselves up, but to bring honor to God and to be a blessing to their neighbor. We can abide by Cicero’s three-fold aim of rhetoric – to teach, to move, and to delight – but only as this aim is informed by the Biblical standards of truth, goodness, and beauty. A properly trained rhetoric student is one who uses his rhetorical skills to teach men the truth, to move men to goodness, and to delight men with verbal beauty.
